This is one of my personal favorite paintings. It's based on a quote from Neitzche that says, "throw roses into the abyss and say: 'here is my thanks to the monster who didn't succeed in swallowing me alive."
It studied the French Naturalists as I painted this piece because I admire how they portray figures in a landscape. The figure in this piece is painted loosely so it doesn't feel too much like a portrait painting and it blends well with the surrounding landscape. In the foreground, the rocks appear three dimensional and give an emphasize to an element of harshness in the terrain.
This listing is for a museum quality giclee print and I have personally made sure that the colors in the reproduction are true to the original painting.
